Medical Abortion

The Process

The abortion pill is the common name for a chemical abortion process that combines two medications: mifepristone and misoprostol. It is also referred to as medical abortion, self-managed abortion, chemical abortion, or RU-486. A chemical abortion is a two step process that typically has side effects such as cramping, bleeding, nausea, diarrhea, headache, and vomiting. In rare cases it can result in an infection, hemorrhaging, or even a ruptured uterus. It can also be dangerous if you don't know how far along your pregnancy is. We offer free ultrasounds to determine the gestational age of your pregnancy and make sure that it is located in your uterus. We also listen to your concerns and questions about the process and have educational materials to help you make an informed decision.

The Facts

The 1st Pill - Mifepristone

  • A doctor will give a woman considering chemical abortion a physical exam to determine if she is eligible for this type of chemical abortion procedure. Not all women are eligible.

  • She may be given antibiotics to prevent infection.

  • She will be given an oral dose of mifepristone during her first office visit.

The 2nd Pill - Misoprostol

  • Misoprostol tablets are taken orally or inserted vaginally about 6 to 48 hours after taking the mifepristone. The tablets cause contractions and expel the remains of the baby. This process may take a few hours or as long as a few days.

  • The woman will need to be examined by her doctor two weeks later to ensure the abortion was complete and to check for complications.

The procedure is unsuccessful approximately 5-10% of the time with the potential of requiring an additional surgical abortion procedure to complete the termination.

You should not buy abortion pills over the Internet because you will bypass important safeguards designed to protect your health (and the health of others). Non-FDA approved drugs carry risks above and beyond expected side effects.
